One two-month cruise around the Land Down Under is being halted following the tragic passing of an older female passenger who was abandoned by the vessel on a remote island.

The elderly woman had been hiking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the excursion for a pause. The ship left without her and came back several hours later after the ship staff became aware the woman was missing.

A major search operation located her person the subsequent day.

Investigative bodies are examining the incident, in coordination with investigators and the official investigator.

Head of the shipping company said that passengers and staff on the Coral Adventurer were told that the rest of the journey had been cancelled due to the "unfortunate death and previous engine troubles".

In a statement, he further stated that guests would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the company was working "to arrange the return journeys of the passengers via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also released an revised communication, and said they had "delivered a directive to the Captain" prohibiting any new passengers from boarding the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would visit the ship in Cairns upon its coming back.
